What is the font you are using? Some fonts display the formatting marks differently (some of them quite weirdly). Tin you post a screen shot?

Above B. you tin can see the spaces as periods, below B. yous can see the spaces as floating dots. This is in the same document. The font is Calisto MT. I've never had this event before. This document did not have this issue in Part 2013, it appeared when we changed over to Role 2016. My guess remains that this is text pasted from some other source or converted from some other source. (Wordperfect?) The only way someone here is going to be able to tell is with an actual document.
As an aside, your lawyer should be sent back to legal writing class. I thought I was bad!

[Sheepish grin] I am the lawyer. The first screen shot was mine, the second was a request from opposing counsel. lol. Its an improvement upon our older templates, but withal a work in progress.
It'south not copy and pasted text. These were documents that I created in Word 2013 so when I opened them in Word 2016, this mess appeared with the formatting marks. I'k not seeing the problem in the certificate you sent. All of the dots are mid-line.
Some of the other tools I use in looking at documents are the Reveal Formatting pane (Shift+F1) and if needed I change the filename extension by adding ".zip" to the end of the proper noun. And then I look at the XML with a text editor. I noticed direct formatting in your numbered section that included special instructions for Asian and Latin text.
I am seeing some very weird dotted underlining that is not hidden text and is not anything else I can think of.
I didn't use the .zip method of examining the xml because I don't come across the lowered dots in any of the text y'all sent.

It was the second screenshot I was referring to about the legal writing. -- The mid-judgement use of upper instance is distracting. (Documents, Your, Federal. I'yard OK with Complaint.) I was admitted to practice in 1979 and tend to be a scrap picky, I guess.

If your previous version of Word was 2010 or earlier, MS made a modify in the "engine" they apply to render text with Word 2013 and that might take something to do with seeing this at present and not before.
And in speculating on pasted or imported (converted) text take seen stuff put out by our bar association that really is bad, often converted from Wordperfect into Word 95 docs and and then edited through the years. More often than not I paste as plain text and reformat in a fresh Discussion document.
I did notice that you lot are using styles.
